First of all, this whole "pregnancy glow" thing is BS...
Sure, ok. I'm sure there are people out there, somewhere who have easy pregnancies with no morning sickness and awesome skin and give birth when they're supposed to. Not this girl. The only glow I ever got was from sweating as I ran to the toilet every 15 minutes for the first two trimesters of my pregnancy, and again for the last few weeks. My skin actually got worse during pregnancy; it dried out in weird places, my cheeks got red, I broke out and was super oily in other places. All those hormones raging through my body were not kind.
Yet, almost every day, someone would tell me I was glowing. On those non makeup days, which happened more and more the bigger my belly got, people would constantly compliment my skin.
I got really good at masking being miserable (newsflash: pregnancy kinda sucks--and we'll dive into that later) and today's post is all about those 8 lifesaving products that helped me fake that pregnancy glow.
Firstly, I got really good about washing my face every day. I had to switch up my routine for my newfound skin needs and make sure it wasn't too harsh for the growing bump. After some trial and error, Neutrogena® came along.
Free of harsh chemical sulfates, parabens, petrolatum, dyes, phthalates; gentle enough for every day and hypoallergenic; this stuff left my face feeling clean inside and out. Sure I threw on a mask every once in a while. Yeah, I had a facial to treat myself. But this was the every day stuff ready for me at the end of a long work shift that left my skin glowing and spot free.
I was lucky enough to win a sample pack of TULA products a few months ago, and while all of them were great, there were only two that I took my credit card out for and one that is now my ride or die (do kids still say that?) face serum. Let's get one thing out of the way, the only real downside to this product is the cost ($78 for a full size bottle) but all the pro's make it totally worth the investment. First off, the little sample I used lasted me a good couple of weeks (which not only made me love the product more but gave me enough time to see if it worked. It does). Second, I could tell a difference in my skin after 3 days?! I'm one of those impatient people that hates working out because the results aren't instant. TULA got as close to instant as possible. I could see the texture of my skin improving before my eyes.
The face serum promotes the appearance of even skin tone, boosts radiance and leaves skin looking bright and well-rested right after application. Was super hydrating, absorbed quickly and was 100% usable under a primer and makeup.
Definitely not the only primer I used during pregnancy but by far the most hydrating. Can absolutely be worn on it's own, as a skin hydrator, but also makes for a surprisingly great primer. I say surprising because I'm kinda of a diehard Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer user and the two have very different textures. While Smashbox gives me that natural finish that just leaves makeup on, Pixi has a dewey finish that, even after rubbing it into your skin, you can feel. Now, this isn't bad; it's great for those looking for a glowing, revitalized complexion. Pairs great with liquid foundation and keeps it in place, didn't leave me patchy or cracking at the end of the day.
Some days, no matter how hydrated I was, no matter how well I washed my face, I was just red all over and broken out and pregnancy...am I right? I needed a full coverage foundation, or at least something buildable, to hide under and that's how this HD stick, that I had kind of cast aside previously, came back into my life.
I had previously put it away because it separated too much on and around my nose and because I take 15 minutes to get ready for work (and that's really all I did while pregnant -- cause no club would let me in) I didn't have time to prime and powder and set and...but then life hack! Someone told me to put concealer on before hand to help get foundation to stay. It totally worked and saved me so much time.
This HD stick disappears seamlessly into the skin. It spreads so easily, the application is fast and the finish is flawless. Love love love.
I'm pretty sure I've talked about this before...I mean, everyone loves this concealer. It's, in my opinion, the best drugstore concealer out there. Buildable, great coverage, no creasing, long lasting. So so so so good. The little foam applicator thing has broken on me a few times, I blame how fast I try to get everything done, but that's honestly my only complaint, and at a $9 price point? You won't find me complaining. I don't use it as a spot corrector, more for under eye, around the nose and forehead to brighter and cover. You can absolutely wear without having to powder and set (although it looks beautiful and not at all cakey when all powdered up also). Definitely one of those products that's been around forever and will stay around forever, for good reason.
This one was new to me. I don't know how, because it's all over the place as drugstore fan favorite bronzer, but I'd honestly only ever used cult favorites NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna and Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Matte Bronzer. While pregnant though, everything honestly just felt too heavy on my face. Most foundations, bronzers, etc; I just felt like I was wearing so much makeup and I wanted to be comfortable (or at least as comfortable as I could be). I also really didn't want to spend another hundred odd dollars in search for new beauty products so I did go on the look for drugstore/affordable options. It's how I found (#4) Pixi and the Physicians Formula Bronzer. First off all it smells like a dream vacation, the packaging of the physical product itself is beautiful (we are choosing to ignore the random foam brush and everything else) and it is so creamy and blend-able.
This one almost didn't make it on, only because it's such a new addition, but I've been using it everytime I put makeup on and it's so sparkly and pigmented and it's packaged like a dream, and the wavey texture when I opened it made my jaw drop (I kid you not). I had to add this on, if for no other reason that it GLOWS. Oh baby!
Too many puns?
Formulated without Parabens, Sulfates & Phthalates this highlighter is also without glitter! It goes on to the skin like a beam of gold light that even my pale skin seems to look good in?! Luminous, silky, buildable for a real POW. It almost looks wet on the skin. I can not say enough good things about this highlighter.
